I'm sure
you have all noticed by now that we FINALLY
LAUNCHED THE LONG AWAITED REDESIGN!
Stamper
mocked up over 100 different headers and navbars
before we finally settled on the new look for NG.
We think it's much more fresh and current than
what everyone is accustomed to, but don't worry,
in time you'll adjust to the new
style!
Ross and James have re-coded the
entire NG back-end from scratch, so you'll notice
the site is running A LOT faster now. That's been
the biggest and most challenging phase of the
redesign, rewriting and optimizing old code that
went all the way back to 1999. We've now laid the
groundwork for all the new features that we've
been planning ever since the redesign
began!
Code junkies will also notice that
we are using CSS for our background stylings and
fonts, although we weren't able to move towards a
completely CSS layout; in order to do so, we would
have had to simplify the layout way too much and
we would have looked like every other bland CSS
site. We think we have a perfect amount of CSS
that ensures pages will load faster while still
looking good, so coupled with the new back-end,
the site should roar.
Tim has spent months
preparing new hardware, so we have additional web
and database servers carrying the load as NG
continues to grow! We're expecting traffic to
surge when news gets out about the recent
changes!
Unfortunately, due to how long the
redesign dragged out, we haven't launched with ALL
the new features (hence the BETA). After staring
at the new level icons for the past months, Jeff
is no longer happy with how they turned out and
wants to redraw them. We always liked his new
level icons, but we trust Jeff's judgment and we
know the new icons will be better than ever.
Expect to see them this summer at the
latest!
Also, we are still dealing with
some bugs pertaining to the new features in the
Audio Portal, so until we get those straightened
out, those features are on indefinite hold.
Finally, the user pages aren't quite ready yet,
either. We are still finishing the features that
will afford you maximum customization of your
page, so you can decorate it however you like, run
fun external code and insert your favorite YouTube
videos and widgets from across the web. It will be
just like Myspace, only you'll be able to
customize your page EVEN MORE!
Be sure to

Just to
let everyone know who ordered stickers,
via the old US mail system, I have completed and
mailed out every last order I had. If you do not
get your order in the next week or two, send me a
PM. We are now taking sticker orders via Pay Pal
and are no longer taking orders via US Mail.
Thanks to everyone who went through the trouble to
order stickers by mailing in your order and
payment.
I still have a bunch of the old
stickers left and I will be giving them away in
various ways from time to time. Also feel free to
stop by and say hi to me and other NG fans in our
little Paltalk
room. We hope to have an upgraded NG Chat
with similar features sometime in the
future! |

Following
the recent topic about dream projects, Bryan
Waterman has just released a teaser for his
upcoming Waterman
Movie, featuring the real live voice of Leslie
Nielsen! So check it out and show some love!
Expect the movie on DVD in early 2008.
Last
night Tim (NG sys-admin) and I made the trek to
NYC to meet up with Brad Graeber (of Captain
Capitalism fame) and his wife, who were in
town from Austen, Texas. We hung out at Barcade in
Brooklyn, drank beer and talked all about exciting
web stuff and the animation business. No real
point to relaying this story, it was just really
cool to meet Brad and I thought I would give his
series a plug.
The new Monthly
Audio Contest has been announced! Whereas last
month people were asked to find
good submissions to use in Pico
Day entries, this month artists have been
asked to make original songs to be used in Pico
Day entries! You should check out the thread, if
for no other reason than to see MindChamber's
awesome Pico / A-Bot art.
I will not be
posting any news about the redesign until we post
the redesign. I've decided to do this because I am
tired of disappointing everyone. Just know that we
remain very busy. |

Big Dreams, Big

More and
more NG contributors have been putting it all on
the line to make their "dream projects" a reality.
Some of them could use help, while others would
just love people to check out what they are up
to!
The guys behind Press
Start are working on a feature length movie
and could use some help with the opening title
sequence. Their idea is to have a montage of 10-15
second "clips" from fabricated videogames of
various eras, games that all of the Press Start
characters are from. They'd be in the style of
existing games, essentially spoofing popular
characters, but without actually using copyrighted
content.
They are looking for someone who
could create the original sprite-based characters
in the vein of classic characters, not just do
pallette swaps of existing characters.
Professionalism will be key, as once you commit to
helping out, you will be expected to see it
through. This is a "passion project" so you won't
be getting paid, but you would get credit in the
film (including credit on IMDB),
as well as lotsa love (and a t-shirt) from the
Press Start guys. :)
If you are good at
creating and animating sprite characters, contact
ED -AT- DARKMAZE.COM with examples of your
previous work.
Elsewhere in the NGverse,
Tyler Gibb has completed a feature length version
of his Minushi
saga! He is currently in the process of seeking
distribution and will be posting additional
chapters to NG. To celebrate the completion (and
answer questions), Tyler has put together a series
of eight documentaries about the making of
Minushi. The first three are currently available
on his
website!
James Farr, creator of the Xombie
series, has just released a Xombie book! GO
BUY IT, NOW!
Finally, Clark and Smith
won the ACMI
Screenit competition for Treasure
Trawler, in the grades 9-12 computer games
category! Congrats, guys!
